Difficulties with specific sounds like “R”, “TH”, “S”, or “L”. These sounds can be close to the target pronunciation but kind of “off” or they can be replaced with a different sound altogether.

Difficulties with many speech sounds being changed or substituted. For example, “F” “V”, “TH”, “SH”, “S”, “Z”, could all be replaced with the “D” sound.

Difficulties with vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar. Children may have a hard time clearly sharing their thoughts, ideas, and feelings, even about daily activities.

Difficulties understanding what other people are saying or asking. Children may have a hard time following daily activities and directions.

Difficulties with speech sounding bumpy or getting stuck instead of coming out smoothly and easily. Big emotions or certain activities can make speech bumpier.

Difficulties using, understanding, and learning language. Children can have trouble following directions, sharing stories about their day, and reading and writing.

Helps children share their wants, needs, feelings, and thoughts with pictures, symbols, and speech devices. This can look like using printable symbols for bedtime routines or using a tablet program to communicate.

Difficulties with the specific social cues used in conversations. Children may experience difficulties with turn taking, body language, understanding social greetings, and speech volume.

Difficulties planning and coordinating all of the tiny movements needed for clear speech. This may sound like every time a child tries to say “ball” it comes out slightly different and is hard to understand.

Difficulties with muscle weakness in the mouth, tongue, and lips. Speech may be hard to understand because it is unclear, slow, and uncontrolled.
